Why invest in a marriage retreat for couples?
I’m not going to lie, before we attended a marriage retreat for couples, I sort of had this idea in my head that people who go to those are trying to salvage a marriage that is falling apart. Or at least, trying to prevent that from happening because they’re starting to see cracks form. Spoiler alert: My opinion has drastically changed since attending one ourselves in May 2026.

Let’s start at the beginning. “Esther, if you felt that way, why did you go in the first place? Sounds like you and James were – you know – having issues.” Great question! As it turns out, James’s parents actually were the first ones to attend the Weekend to Remember marriage retreat for couples. It wasn’t the first one they had attended, but it touched their hearts to the point that they actually bought a gift certificate for us to attend our own Weekend to Remember!
Now, when we first got this gift, I was touched that they thought of us. Their marriage is a beautiful thing to see. After nearly 35 years together, they have a strong bond together and are constantly striving to better themselves and their relationship. Though, I have to admit, I still wondered if there would really be anything that we needed to attend a conference for. I mean, I felt like we communicated well. We resolved conflict without taking any real psychic damage. We clung to each other in the throws of parenting our 1 year old and 3 year old.
But I mean, hey, it would be a great excuse to go somewhere for two whole nights, and we weren’t even allowed to take the kids with us. The worst that could happen is a break that reminded us of all of the basics of having a good marriage. So we finally scheduled a time, carved out a weekend (which is incredibly hard to do as a wedding photographer and videographer and took us two years to actually accomplish), arranged a babysitter (my mom), and drove off to Birmingham for a weekend!
I hope this goes to encourage you that even if you’re a little skeptical or don’t really think that you need a marriage retreat if you’re just starting out a marriage or in some other high season, it is still incredibly impactful. I’d even venture to say that doing marriage retreats on a regular basis is a quintessential way to invest in your marriage and be the husband, wife, mom, and dad that you dream of being. I truly believe that if every couple were to take these times once a year and truly apply themselves to what they learned, we might even see divorce rates fall.
Now, I’m not saying it has to be this couples retreat or that you even have to pay for a whole big conference every year. However, I believe the Weekend to Remember marriage retreat by Family Life is a great place to start. That being said, we have partnered with them to offer a discounted Group rate for all of our couples to have the chance to start off their marriage right and hopefully be able to attend the conference while you’re still in the honeymoon stage of the relationship.

As a part of the wedding industry, I know how insane that market is. I see people every day who spend thousands upon thousands of dollars building up the perfect wedding day that they can remember throughout the remainder of their lives. Obviously, as a photographer and videographer, we definitely feel that these memories are significant. We believe that the wedding day is a sacred ceremony that you can never truly do over. It is a time when all of the people you love from all over the country and maybe even outside of it can be gathered under one roof to celebrate the beauty of the love you have found. This is most definitely a worthy thing to invest whatever you feel is worth investing into it.
But I will always stand by the fact that marriage is far greater than weddings. Marriage is what we want to capture. Big weddings without real marriage to follow are like one night stands. They are quick, often pleasurable in the moment, but they leave emptiness and scarring where you should have oneness and healing.
If you want your marriage to be as beautiful as your wedding day, then invest in it like you do the wedding. Sometimes, that means bringing in a professional to bring the beauty of your dreams into application. If this speaks to you and you want to start with the marriage retreat for couples that stole our hearts and brought us closer together, use our Group Code (NextDoorDigital) in checkout to get $100 off ♡
